So last month in Concelio, we set a HUGE goal for the mission como never before in the history of the mission. We were all talking about how we need to find people to teach. So president said we should focus on one week, ONE WEEK TO ENCONTRAR!!! FIND!!! What should the goal be? How many can we find? It started out low like 150 nuevos. Then some Elder says “Hey, our mission goal for the year for baptisms is 555, let´s find 555” ¡¡SOMOS LOCOS!! Someone did the math and each companionship would need to find at least 7 new investigators in a week. So here we´ve been in Cartagena for 4 weeks.. we´d found a couple people but no one has been progressing and I´m not gonna lie I thought that was a high goal but vamos… we set the goal and went to our areas. Every district meeting and Zone meeting and conference was centered on planning and finding. We need to work with the members — but this is the week that the Ward took their trip up to the Temple. So they were ALL GONE.
We had miracles this week!
Monday after getting back late from our hike we went to visit a woman we gave a pamphlet to a few weeks ago. She said “I looked at that tarjeta you gave me and knew I needed to have more faith! (the card says FE with a picture of Christ) It was a huge blessing! DIME DIME DIME! tell me tell me!” She was so excited to hear our message. So 1 for us and 59 for Mission.
Tuesday: We found no one. Mission 105 total 164
Wednesday: We tried again to visit a sister and her daughter (the Elders had called with a reference that turned out to be the daughter) We were confused and kind of sad when the daughter left during the lesson because we felt like we really needed to find her and teach her. Then their neighbor walked in. We finished the lesson, she loved it, and she is our new investigator. And we added the daughter of a woman who comes to English Class. Mission 115 Total 278.
Thursday: We found no one. Mission 83 Total 361.
Friday: During a lesson a few weeks ago I closed my eyes to get some revelation. A girl with a striped shirt and blue skinny jeans came into my head and I told myself that the next time I see someone with that description I will talk to. But it´s suuuuper hot here and todo el mundo is in their bathing suits and shorts. But we left the building of our lesson and right across the street was a girl in a striped shirt and blue skinny jeans. We hadn’t had a chance to teach her until we found her home today. Her mom actually came over while we were teaching and said “Oh weird, E, your dad had 2 boys over from this church to teach him when you were just a little girl” que guay. Mission 77 Total 438.
Saturday: We went to see an old investigator. Her son was there and let us in and wanted us to teach him. Then we went to a woman who lives across the hall from members and she let us in. She said “I just don´t understand why there are so many churches!” Girl let me just tell you there was a young man named Jose Smith with that same question - we taught the Restoration. She´s awesome. She came to church with us yesterday. Mission total 507.
Sunday: We found no one. But the Mission found in total 558!
The second week in August was tough. We had been teaching a family and the Mom has to go back to Equador. I was reading in 1Nefi 17 about when Nefi builds the boat because I thought we could share something simple with them about how like Nefi he had to trust in the Lord in his viaje and we want the family to feel comfort that they will be together again soon (cause the dad and kids are staying here for another month or so) anyway so I was reading and everything applied to me, I read it in a new light and I just LOVE THE SCRIPTURES YOU GUYS I CAN´T EVEN EXPRESS IT okay so as we read in verse 4, they had been traveling for 8 YEARS. Then after all their tribulations and journeying they make it to the beautiful land of Bountiful. I know this is a stretch because obviously I wasn´t in Cadiz for 8 years but I was there for a long time looking for investigators trying to work hard with what I had and then yeah we found a lot and things were beautiful! Our investigators were progressing and the work was moving forward and I was comfortable there in my little land of “bountiful” Then the lord says hey… I need you to build a ship you have to leave again. And I LOVE vs.13. And I will be your light in the wilderness and I will prepare the way before you if it so be that ye shall keep my commandments wherefore inasmuch as ye shall keep my commandments ye shall be led towards the promised land and ye shall know that it is by me that ye are led. I´m here in Cartagena, and in some ways I´m starting from square 1 again. NO investigators.. struggling to have any lessons (plus it´s August the month everyone travels in Spain) but I love that verse because I realized that he continued to put them in darkness in their journey so they would KNOW TO RELY AND LOOK TO GOD. Because he was the light. We are working so hard but the Lord is trying to teach us something. We need to be reminded that it doesn´t matter how well we speak, how well we teach, our talents and abilites THIS IS THE LORDS WORK and we just do our best, we be obedient and we recognize that it´s him not us that is going to get this work moving along here. It´s true.. this is his work. El tiene todo poder solo estoy un instrumento en sus manos sabes.
The guy who SAVED ME LIFE THIS WEEK yeah here we go, story time…… We went to the capilla to Eva´s baptism (She´s a lil 8 year old in the ward and she´s the last in her family of 6 to get baptized it was presh) Afterwards the ward did this thing called Cena de verano it happens every Friday night at the church, the whole ward comes and brings food and eats and has a good time. Well I was just talking to Gladys and Evans (they are from Nigeria so we speak English together) and my companion brings me a plate of food and we´re outside it´s dark I can´t see what it is but she says it´s something with fruit. So I take a bite and can taste the fruit, Then I taste something weird look up at her and see her picking through hers on her plate and then she looks up at me in with sheer panic on her face ¡HERMANA! VEN VEN VEN she grabbed my arm and ran me into the bathroom “Spit it out! It´s salmon!” “I already swallowed it!” “THROW IT UP!” “I´M GONNA DIE!!!!!!!!!!!” she opens the door and looks down the hall and there he is, Spencer. Spencer is a doctor, and he is from South Ogden Utah and went to Bonneville High (I learned this as he was stabbing me in the butt with a giant needle) He saw I was having a reaction and ran to his car and back in with all his equipment and stabbed me right there in the relief society room. Guys. It was a complete miracle. This guy isn´t even in our ward, he shouldn´t have even been there he was on the clock on the busiest night of the week. Saved my life :)
